So the first week of the season has completed for the teams playing in the GBMSL. Before you know it we’ll be winding down and finishing off the season!
This year we have 248 kids registered for baseball in Minesing. This is our largest enrolment and if we include those that we had to put on a waiting list our registration would be closer to 275!! It certainly appears that baseball is alive and well in Minesing and area!
This year we will be fielding 12 teams in the GBMSL. This includes 1 Tyke, 3 Mite, 3 Squirt, 3 Peewee, 1 Bantam and 1 Midget teams. In our Local League we will have 5 T-Ball and 4 Tyke teams.
For those of you that play or practice at the school diamonds in Minesing you will notice that our annual battle with the Simcoe County District School Board has begun regarding maintenance and grass cutting. For those that aren’t aware Diamonds 1, 2 and 3 are the responsibility of the school board and Diamond 4 the Township of Springwater. It is fabulous that we have the use of these school facilities through the Community Use of Schools Program but it is frustrating when they continually look unkempt and run down.
Minesing Minor Ball and the Minesing Recreation Service Board have approached the school about funding repairs and upgrades to the diamonds but until we have permission from the school board we cannot proceed. Unfortunately we are not in a position to take over maintenance and will have to rely on the board for that function.
So, if you are bothered by the state of our diamonds I encourage you to let your feelings be known to the Maintenance department of the School Board. We use these diamonds almost every night of the week and host teams from across the County but often we look like poor hosts when visiting teams are subjected to the poor condition of our fields. Let’s hope that the school board finally gets the message and steps up maintenance!
